This is a work in progress. These are songs I listen to when working on anything regarding Lewis.

(1) Alone ~ Heart
(2) I'll Stand By You ~ The Pretenders
(3) Don't You Forget About Me ~ Simple Minds
(4) Here I Am ~ Bryan Adams
(5) You Can't Take Me ~ Bryan Adams
(6)(Everything I Do) I Do It For You ~ Bryan Adams [definitely a song for Lewis and his wife, Val]
(7) Uptown Girl ~ Billy Joel
(8) You May Be Right ~ Billy Joel
(9) Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel) ~ Billy Joel [definitely a song for the relationship Lewis has with his children - even if they could fight and yell at him he loved them more than his own life and he always will]
(10) All About Soul ~ Billy Joel [I'm a horrible Robbie/Laura shipper so, yeah, this song is for them]
(11) River Of Dreams ~ Billy Joel

(12) Streets Of Philadelphia ~ Bruce Springsteen
This one is here for some very sentimental reasons. One, it was one of my first 'favorite' songs and, two, the lyrics are perfect for Lewis and what I think went on during the lost year after his wife's death. I know it says 'Philadelphia' but the song applies to anyone who has lost everything - that the world has turned their back on. The 'friends vanished and gone' are, of course, Lewis's wife and Morse. As for the angel not greeting him - in the first episode of 'Lewis' Lewis talks about how his wife's death finished him on religion.

I was bruised and battered
And I couldn't tell what I felt
I was unrecognizable to myself
Saw my reflection in a window
I didn't know my own face

Oh brother are you gonna leave me wasting away
On the streets of Philadelphia

I walked the avenue till my legs felt like stone
I heard the voices of friends vanished and gone
At night I could hear the blood in my veins
Just as black and whispering as the rain
On the streets of Philadelphia

Ain't no angel gonna greet me
It's just you and I my friend
And my clothes don't fit me no more
I walked a thousand miles just to slip this skin

(13) The Show Must Go On ~ Queen
This one is included because I love it too much not to. This song fits perfect for the Series Two finale (2.04) which leaves the viewer wondering if Lewis is going to lose himself to darkness again.

(14) To Where You Are ~ Richard Marx [This song is so beautiful and it is here because it reflects the feeling the viewer is left with at the end of the episode Quality of Mercy, 3.02, where Lewis finally finds out who it was that killed his wife and her case is finally closed. After five years, Val can rest in peace and Lewis can finally start moving on and healing. I think the sad and, yet, hopeful tone of this song works well for conveying Lewis's coming to terms with Val's death and realizing he is free now to live again. He is saying, "Goodbye," to Val - he will always love her and cherish her but he can finally say a proper 'goodbye' and let go of his sorrow and guilt. He can now move on for real.

Who can say for certain
Maybe you're still here
I feel you all around me
Your memory, so clear

Deep in the stillness
I can hear you speak
You're still an inspiration
Can it be
That you are mine
Forever love
And you are watching over me from up above

Fly me up to where you are
Beyond the distant star
I wish upon tonight
To see you smile
If only for awhile to know you're there
A breath away not far
To where you are

Are you gently sleeping
Here inside my dream
And isn't faith believing
All power can't be seen

As my heart holds you
Just one beat away
I cherish all you gave me everyday
'Cause you are my
Forever love
Watching me from up above

And I believe
That angels breathe
And that love will live on and never leave

(15) Don't Go Breakin' My Heart ~ Elton John with Kiki Dee
Another one for Robbie and Val. In both Inspector Morse and Lewis the amount of love and adoration Robbie expresses toward Val is really something to be envied. I think anyone who has ever yearned for someone to live life with would want what they had - not just husband and wife but also lovers and best friends. Robbie's loyalty to Val is so very sweet and it's only after her killer is brought to justice that he really shows serious interest in pursuing love again. Faithful through it all.

(16) True Colors ~ Phil Collins (originally by Cyndi Lauper)
(17) If I Should Fall Behind ~ Bruce Springsteen
(18) Stop And Stare ~ OneRepublic

This is a beautiful song and it's all getting included here. This song perfectly sums up what I think happened in the year that Lewis spent in Oxford after Val's death. I imagine the thoughts that went through his head after being offered the position in the British Virgin Islands and this song expresses those thoughts.

This town is colder now, I think it's sick of us
It's time to make our move, I'm shakin off the rust
I've got my heart set on anywhere but here
I'm staring down myself, counting up the years
Steady hands, just take the wheel...
And every glance is killing me
Time to make one last appeal... for the life I lead

Stop and stare
I think I'm moving but I go nowhere
Yeah I know that everyone gets scared
But I've become what I can't be, oh
Stop and stare
You start to wonder why you're 'here' not there
And you'd give anything to get what's fair
But fair ain't what you really need
Oh, can you see what I see

They're tryin to come back, all my senses push
Un-tie the weight bags, I never thought I could...
Steady feet, don't fail me now
Gonna run till you can't walk
But something pulls my focus out
And I'm standing down...

Stop and stare
I think I'm moving but I go nowhere
Yeah I know that everyone gets scared
But I've become what I can't be, oh
Stop and stare
You start to wonder why you're here not there
And you'd give anything to get what's fair
But fair ain't what you really need
Oh, you don't need

What you need, what you need...

Stop and stare
I think I'm moving but I go nowhere
Yeah I know that everyone gets scared
But I've become what I can't be
Oh, do you see what I see...

(19) Friends Of Mine ~ Hugh Dillon
Never thought I'd take the time
Thought I'd said goodbye
Thought I'd left it all behind the
Pages of life
Maybe it's not that pretty
It's just a place in time
Those days are gone forever
So are those friends of mine
Never thought I'd take the time
Thought I'd said goodbye
Never leave it all behind
Pages of my life

(20) My Mistakes ~ Hugh Dillon
If you count all my mistakes
I would have to walk away
I just could not take another yesterday
I’ve not the strength to fade away
Now if I admit defeat
Tell me what then will that mean
Will I cease to be or will I be redeemed
Or will it be the end of me

And you ought to know by now
To get out from under that cloud
That took all my power
And it’s the only thing that counts
Well I smile as I stand here today
With all the mistakes I’ve made
Now in my darkest night
They’re the brightest stars in the sky

(21) Only When I Sleep ~ The Corrs
But it's only when I sleep
See you in my dreams
You got me spinning round and round
Turning upside-down
But I only hear you breathe

Somewhere in my sleep
Got me spinning round and round
Turning upside-down
But its only when I sleep

And when I wake from slumber
Your shadow's disappear
Your breath is just a sea mist
Surrounding my body
I'm workin' through the daytime
But when it's time to rest
I'm lying in my bed
Listening to my breath
Falling from the edge

(22) Forgiven Not Forgotten ~ The Corrs
A bleeding heart torn apart
Left on an icy grave
In their room where they once lay
Face to face
Nothing could get in their way
But now the memories of the man are haunting her days
And the craving never fades
She's still dreaming of the man long forgiven
But not forgotten

(23) Closer ~ The Corrs
I'm a total sap. This song is here because I'm a raging Lewis/Hobson shipper. I want Robbie to be happy again and I loved Hobson from the first time she appeared on Inspector Morse. Dr. Laura Hobson is a complex character but there is one simple part of her life - she cares deeply for Lewis. She didn't set out to do that but after nearly 15 years of knowing each other it sort of just happened. I hope that in the new series (and likely to be the last series) Lewis finally wises up and sees that Hobson really does want to be with him despite what he thinks are his numerous flaws. Lewis is just so oblivious - he'll get it one day, though.

I see you, walking everyday
With a smile beneath frown
But I won't look away, yeah

What does it mean
What's there to see
If I look

Closer, closer, closer, closer
Closer, closer, closer, closer

Where are you going
And what are you thinking at all
Your eyes show nothing more
Than a dazed oblivion
What does it mean
What will I see
When I look

Closer, closer, closer, closer
Closer, closer, closer, closer..., ah, yeah

You don't see me
Watching everyday
My smile could warm your frown
And I'd never look away, never look away

There's more to me (there's more to me)
Than what you see
When you look

Closer, closer, closer, closer
Closer, closer, closer, closer

(24) Strange Things ~ Randy Newman
This one just popped into my head as a good song for when Lewis returns to Oxford and Innocent is determined to send him 'out to pasture'. Lewis's life hasn't turned out like he expected - he's a widower and all his friends are gone, save Dr. Hobson. Heck, I think this song sums up a good portion of the very first episode of Lewis.

I was on top of the world
it was right in my pocket
I was living the life
things were just the way they should be
When from out of the sky like a bomb comes some little punk in a rocket
now all of a sudden some strange things are happening to me

I had friends,
I had lots of friends
Now all my friends are gone
And I'm doing the best I can to carry on

I had power (power)
I was respected (respect)
But not any more
And I've lost the love the one whom I adored

Let me tell you about the strange things are happening to me
Strange things
Strange things are happening to me...
Ain't no doubt about it

You got someone you think you know well
It turns out a stranger
The minute you turn your back
You're in it all by yourself

They laugh at your jokes,
You think you're doing quite well
But you're in danger, boy
You end up alone, forgotten, way up on the shelf

(25) Apologize (Variations on Piano Solo) ~ Kyle Landry (originally by OneRepublic)
God, this song. I had this one on repeat for days as I worked on Robbie's application to DramaDramaDuck. This is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard and it summed up so well the tone I was going for with Robbie as I was taking him from the end of Series Two. Without words this song evokes the emotions of the final episode of Series Two and is just amazing. The song takes you to a place of hope, melancholy, profound sadness, and complete chaos. Absolutely brilliant work. If I had to pick ONE song which most influenced how I developed Robbie's voice and how I continue to portray him it would be this one.

(26) Rose of England ~ Chris de Burgh
This song is a tearjerker. The first part of the song is how I picture Robbie thinking back on the early days of his relationship with Val. He saw her as someone who was out of his league but she was drawn to the scruffy teen that she ran into at a concert. As he refers to her as 'Bonnie Lass' (Pretty Girl) I think he would consider Val his 'Rose of England' and that is why I even titled one of my fanfics after this song.

Hear my voice and listen well, and a story I will tell,
How duty brought a broken heart, and why a love so strong
Must fall apart;

She was lovely, she was fine, daughter of a royal line,
He, no equal, but for them it mattered little for they were in love;

Rose of England, sweet and fair, shining with the sun,
Rose of England, have a care, for where the thorn is,
There the blood will run;
Oh my heart, oh my heart;

Through the summer days and nights, stolen kisses and delights
Would thrill their hearts and fill their dreams with all emotions
That true love can bring

And the last bit of the song is prefect for expressing his words in the series six finale - how he was just destined to be a widower. His life was now pledged to serving his country and there was no room in his life or his heart to commit to someone new. I just changed the words a little to fit.

And so with heavy weight of life he kissed his lover one last time,
"This land I wed, and no lass comes, for if I cannot have you, I'll have
None"

(27) When I'm Gone ~ Eminem
This song is included because there are lyrics that just struck a chord and the overall tone of the song fits how I see Robbie's relationship with his children. Robbie is shown arguing with his son over how much time he spent at work during the Morse series as well as realizing that his daughter grew up while he was at work all the time. I think that's why Robbie gets a little sentimental over his kids - he tried his best to be there for them but in order to give them a better life than he had he had to work more than he should have. This is a song about regrets and I think Robbie has a lot of regrets when it comes to his children especially his son.

Have you ever loved someone so much, you'd give an arm for?
Not the expression, no, literally give an arm for?
When they know they're your heart
And you know you were their armour
And you will destroy anyone who would try to harm her
But what happens when karma, turns right around and bites you?
And everything you stand for, turns on you to spite you?
What happens when you become the main source of her pain?

--
"You're making Mommy cry, why? Why is Mommy crying?"
Baby, Daddy ain't leaving no more, "Daddy you're lying
"You always say that, you always say this is the last time
"But you ain't leaving no more, Daddy you're mine"
She's piling boxes in front of the door trying to block it
"Daddy please, Daddy don't leave, Daddy - no stop it!"

--
I look up, it's just me standing in the mirror
These fuckin' walls must be talking, cuz man I can hear 'em
They're saying "You've got one more chance to do right" - and it's tonight
Now go out there and show that you love 'em before it's too late

--
"I followed you Daddy, you told me that you weren't leavin'
"You lied to me Dad, and now you make Mommy sad
"And I bought you this coin, it says 'Number One Dad'
"That's all I wanted, I just want to give you this coin
"I get the point - fine, me and Mommy are going"
But baby wait, "it's too late Dad, you made your choice
"Now go out there and show 'em that you love 'em more than us"

--
And when I'm gone, just carry on, don't mourn
Rejoice every time you hear the sound of my voice
Just know that I'm looking down on you smiling
And I didn't feel a thing, So baby don't feel no pain
Just smile back
And when I'm gone, just carry on, don't mourn
Rejoice every time you hear the sound of my voice
Just know that I'm looking down on you smiling
And I didn't feel a thing, So baby don't feel no pain
Just smile back...

(28) We Are One ~ from The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride
This song applies to two parts of Lewis's life - his relationship with Morse and his relationship with his children. The words in the song express Morse's pride in Lewis and how Lewis is a little daunted by the legacy he has to live up to in Morse. Additionally, the lyrics gives voice to the concerns Lewis's children have as they find their own paths and how they will make it without their mother - they don't know how to live up to the expectations that their father has for them but, at the same time, they know how much he loves both of them. This is a song about connections - bonds which not even death can break.

As you go through life you'll see
There is so much that we
Don't understand

And the only thing we know
Is things don't always go
The way we planned

But you'll see every day
That we'll never turn away
When it seems all your dreams come undone

We will stand by your side
Filled with hope and filled with pride
We are more than we are
We are one

If there's so much I must be
Can I still just be me
The way I am?

Can I trust in my own heart
Or am I just one part
Of some big plan?

Even those who are gone
Are with us as we go on
Your journey has only begun

Tears of pain, tears of joy
One thing nothing can destroy
Is our pride, deep inside
We are one

We are one, you and I
We are like the earth and sky
One family under the sun

All the wisdom to lead
All the courage that you need
You will find when you see
We are one
